TODD HUNTER NAMED FRIEND OF MEDICINE BY STATE MEDICAL GROUP
State Representative Honored For His Work On Behalf of Doctors and Patients

AUSTIN – State Rep. Todd Hunter has been named one of Texas medicine’s best legislators by the Texas Medical Association.

On Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, Hunter will be honored as one of 12 legislators named “Our Friends of Medicine,” an award given by the state’s largest medical group to legislators who have gone “above and beyond” to help improve the health of 24 million Texans.

These legislators “have worked tirelessly to make a difference for Texas and for Texas patients,” said a TMA spokesperson.

Hunter represents District 32 which includes Aransas, Calhoun, San Patricio and part of Nueces counties. He served as a legislator from 1989 to 1997 before leaving public office to spend more time with his family He was elected to office for a fifth term in 2008.

“I am honored to receive this award from Texas doctors and health care practitioners,” said Representative Hunter. “Since 1853, TMA has been at the forefront of efforts to improve public health in our state. Their work has helped Texas develop a health care system that is nationally recognized for its innovation and service to its patients.”

“Representative Hunter has been a stout defender and protector of the liability reforms passed in 2003,” said Dr. Bill Fleming, TMA president.  “In 2009, he served as chair of the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee, and we could not be more pleased with his leadership. As chair of the committee that oversees judicial and civil justice issues, he helped lead important efforts to improve Texas’ business climate. His service has been recognized by awards from the Texas Civil Justice League and Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which cited Representative Hunter for his “wise and courageous leadership.”

“He also served as a member of the House Insurance Committee and was a key advocate and supporter of our legislation to make health insurance companies more accountable for their actions.”

TMA said the group wanted to honor Representative Hunter for “his friendship, passion, commitment, and determination to champion issues important to organized medicine and quality patient care. We want to thank you for working relentlessly to keep Texas’ medical liability reforms intact.”

The Texas Medical Association was organized to serve the people of Texas in matters of medical care, prevention and cure of disease, and the improvement of public health. Today, it has more than 43,000 physician and medical student members.
